What we check

Wikidata is the free, structured database behind Wikipedia, and anyone can add to it. We search it for your name — the name in your structured data, or else your site name or page title — and look only at items whose name or alias matches it exactly (ignoring case). For each, we read its official website.

An item whose official website is your site passes. If your structured data’s sameAs doesn’t link to that item, it scores 0.8, with a fix. An item with your name but a different website scores 0.3: it may be someone else with the same name. An item with your name but no website, or no item at all, scores nothing. We treat www and the bare domain as the same site.

Why it matters

AI systems lean on Wikidata to tell entities apart and to connect what they know. An item that names your official website is an independent, machine-readable statement that you exist and that this site is yours. It’s how a model knows that Example the scheduling company and Example the band are different things.

Linking to it from your own sameAs closes the loop: your site points to the item, and the item points back.

How to pass

  1. Create a Wikidata item for your organization, product, or yourself. This is allowed and encouraged; it is not the same as writing your own Wikipedia article. Log in and choose “Create a new Item”.
  2. Give it a label (your name) and a one-line description, then add at least instance of (for example, business or software), official website (your home page address), and the same profiles you list in sameAs (LinkedIn, GitHub, and so on).
  3. Add the item to your home page’s structured data:
    <script type="application/ld+json">
    {
      "@context": "https://schema.org",
      "@type": "Organization",
      "@id": "https://example.com/#org",
      "name": "Example",
      "url": "https://example.com/",
      "sameAs": [
        "https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q123456",
        "https://www.linkedin.com/company/example/"
      ]
    }
    </script>

If an item with your name belongs to someone else, add a description to yours that tells them apart.
