What we check

This check is type-specific: which directories we look for depends on what your structured data says you are.

  • Software or a product: G2, Capterra, Product Hunt, and AlternativeTo. The score is the share of the four you’re on.
  • An organization or local business: a LinkedIn company page, Crunchbase, and a Google Business Profile.
  • A person: GitHub, LinkedIn, and a publisher or speaker page (an O’Reilly author page, or a conference speaker page). Two of the three is a pass.
  • A blog or website with a feed: we skip this check; mentions and Wikipedia carry it instead.

We read your sameAs profiles first, then try the usual address for each directory, built from your name. A page only counts as your listing if it mentions your domain, because a name like “example” often belongs to someone else. Capterra, a Google Business Profile, and a person’s listings are found only through sameAs. Directories that turn bots away can’t be checked and are left out of the score; if none can be checked, we skip.

Why it matters

When someone asks an AI assistant for “the best scheduling tool for clinics” or “an accountant in Denver”, it answers from sources like these. Review sites and directories are where comparisons come from, and being absent from them means being absent from the comparison.

They’re also independent confirmation that you exist, with the same name and the same website, somewhere you don’t control.

How to pass

  1. Claim or create a listing on each directory the detail names as missing. Each one has a “list your product” or “claim your company” page.
  2. Put your website address on each listing, so it can be tied back to you.
  3. Add each listing to your home page’s sameAs, so it can be found even when its address isn’t the obvious one:
    "sameAs": [
      "https://www.g2.com/products/example/reviews",
      "https://www.capterra.com/p/123456/Example/",
      "https://www.producthunt.com/products/example",
      "https://alternativeto.net/software/example/about/"
    ]

For a local business, a Google Business Profile is the most valuable of all; add its Maps link to sameAs, or as hasMap.
